Modder, meertjes en hoogteverschillen. Wandelen voor gevorderden in natuurreservaat de Witten.
De auto parkeren we aan de Wittenweg. Er is genoeg ruimte langs de kant van de weg om deze veilig neer te zetten. Vanuit hier wandel je zo het bos in. Wij liepen tegen de klok in.
Het wordt meteen duidelijk dat er in dit bos flink huisgehouden is door de bosbouwers. Lange sporen van rupsbanden trekken door het hele bos, welke voornamenlijk uit berkenbomen bestaat. Het positieve hieraan is dat de wandelpaden hierdoor duidelijk zichtbaar zijn. Het enige pad welke ik kon vinden brengt je langs de zijkant van het gebied. Je komt dus niet dwars door het gebied. Dit zou ook lastig gaan, want hier vind je niets dan hoog gras en meertjes.
Halverwege de route houd het duidelijke pad een beetje op. Je moet hier zelf goed opletten waar je kan wandelen. Doordat dit een oud veengebied is, krijg je te maken met veel hoogteverschillen. Ook is het een erg nat gebied. Er wordt flink afgewaterd, maar zonder regenlaarzen kan je verzekerd zijn van natte voeten.
Ik kwam hier tijdens het wandelen niemand tegen. Wel zijn er genoeg tekenen dat er veel dieren zijn die dit gebied als thuis zien. De vele ligplekken van reeën en holen van andere dieren zijn hier het bewijs voor. Ik hield de hond hier aan de lijn. Hoewel het momenteel niet het geval was, kan het natuurlijk zo zijn dat dit gebied begraast wordt.
In onze kinderjaren midden jaren 50 was dit een goed gebied om eieren te zoeken. In die tijd was het niet zo streng geregeld. We gingen vooral voor eendeneieren. In onze arme veenarbeidersgezinnen waren ze erg welkom. Net zoals de vissen uit het naastliggende Zwindersche kanaal. Er waren toen naast de wilde eenden ook grutto’s en wilpen. Ook aan de zuidzijde van de Berkmeerweg. Verder ook veel kieviten in het voorjaar op de landerijen ten westen van de Witten. Verder was er bente die sneden we en maakten er bosjes van, die voor 2 cent per stuk ingeleverd werden bij Olde Roelof de Jonge in Dalerpeel, die ze weer verkocht aan dakbedekkingsbedrijven. Ook plukten we zonnedauw, ik meen voor 1 gulden een zak vol. Voor medicijnproduktie denk ik. Op de Heugte stond altijd behoorlijk veel water en was het knap gevaarlijk moerassig. Vriendelijke groet. Een al 80 jarige fan van Natuurpark Dalerpeel. Ik ben daar midden in het veen op 11 september 1945 geboren.
